Adam Bonin, PhD
Principal Scientist & Founder
BonSci Consulting

Adam is an interdisciplinary scientific consultant with more than 25 years of experience specializing in project and program management, technical report preparation and review, environmental permitting and compliance, environmental impact analysis, ecological and human health risk assessment, toxicology, environmental microbiology, aquatic invasive species risk assessment, meeting facilitation, and operations management. His varied experience spans the private and public sectors where he has worked as a consultant, an analytical chemist, a research scientist, and an instructor.

Adam began his journey at the University of Rhode Island as a research assistant studying Lyme Disease. Subsequently, he obtained a position as an environmental chemist at the university’s Graduate School of Oceanography studying the atmospheric deposition of contaminants. Adam then worked for two environmental analytical laboratories in Rhode Island and Oregon, respectively. Following these chemistry appointments, he shifted into the consulting space spending 5 years conducting environmental field work across North America, developing field chemistry methods for screening chemicals in soil and water, validating analytical data reports, and preparing environmental reports.

A desire for further education led Adam to graduate school where he studied microorganisms living in extreme environments (“extremophiles”), including the cold anoxic sediments of Skan Bay, Alaska and the deep, hot, terrestrial subsurface of the South African gold mines. While living in a mining community near Johannesburg, South Africa for 3 months, he developed a microbiological laboratory and cultivated microbes collected during opportunistic visits into the deep mines, sometimes exceeding 1 mile below the Earth’s surface.

After earning his Doctorate, Adam completed a microbial ecology postdoctoral appointment employing cultivation and molecular methods to identify diverse microbial assemblages in plant root rhizospheres. A return to private industry afforded the key opportunities and experiences that supported his continued development as a competent and trusted consultant. Adam’s role as a regional operations manager represented a significant opportunity to hone his skills for communicating technical information across myriad subjects to a wide range of audiences. Most recently, he worked as a senior toxicology consultant for a life science contract research organization. These distinct experiences set the stage for his eventual quest to become an independent scientific consultant.

Adam has led and contributed to environmental permitting projects for both private applicants and agencies (as a third-party contractor) for the mining, transportation, renewable energy, and water transmission sectors. He has also conducted toxicological evaluations and ecological and human health risk assessments for a variety of chemicals in support of remedial investigations, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) environmental assessments (EA), NEPA environmental impact statements (EIS), California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) environmental impact reports (PEIR), natural resource damage assessments (NRDA), and FDA product applications.

Adam founded BonSci Consulting in 2024 after more than 2 decades of scientific consulting and analytical laboratory experiences. Diverse scientific knowledge and broad experience equip him with an innate ability to understand and lead multifaceted projects while developing innovative and thoughtful solutions to complex issues.  Exceptional interpersonal communication skills allow him to connect with broad
audiences and develop deep relationships with clients. BonSci collaborates with other independent contractors, consultancies, and analytical laboratories in a reliable, professional network to build successful teams ensuring delivery of high-quality client support and work products. Adam’s natural curiosity and eagerness to learn facilitate his ability to rapidly acquire a key understanding of emerging technical issues to support his clients.
